What Are the Benefits of Precision Measurement in Tailoring?

Precision measurement means a suit that fits your actual body, not an average one. More measurements capture the asymmetries and proportions that standard sizes miss, so the suit moves with you and needs less fixing afterwards. At Chokman, every suit starts with 30+ measurements.

How many measurements do tailors take?

Approach

Typical measurements

Off-the-rack

5 to 8

Made-to-measure

10 to 15

Chokman (all suits)

33+

These are typical figures from our experience. Services vary.

What the extra measurements fix

Most bodies are not symmetrical. Shoulders sit at different heights and arms are almost always different lengths. The extra measurements capture those differences.

Measurement

The problem it prevents

Shoulder slope and shoulder blade position

Wrinkles and pulling across the upper back

Lower back curve

A jacket that gaps or bunches at the back

Seat fullness

Trousers that pull or pinch when you sit

Left and right arm lengths

Uneven sleeves

Bicep width

Sleeves that restrict you when you reach

Calf circumference

Trouser legs that do not drape cleanly

Posture angles

A jacket that hangs unevenly or rides up at the front

Why it matters

  • Comfort and movement. One client wore his suit as best man and danced all day without needing to adjust it.

  • Fewer alterations. Another client told us the jacket fitted without any. Fittings then fine-tune the suit rather than rescue it.

  • A fit that suits your build. Slim, athletic or larger, the suit is cut for you, not scaled from a standard size.

  • Consistency across a group. At weddings, every groomsman is measured individually, with no shared patterns, so each fits correctly whatever their build.

What happens at your appointment

It starts with a 30-minute consultation about your style, fabric and occasion, followed by your measurements. Your suit is then made in-house by our tailors, with a fitting at the end and adjustments where needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does more measuring cost extra? No. 30+ measurements are included in both Tailor Made (made-to-measure) and True Bespoke. True Bespoke adds more for its paper pattern. Prices start at $699 for a two-piece suit. See our Sydney suit price guide.

Do I still need a fitting? Yes. At least one fitting is included, so we can check the fit on you and fine-tune it.
