It's one of the most common questions we hear at Chokman: "How much does a bespoke suit actually cost in Sydney?" The honest answer is that it depends — but not in the vague, evasive way that most tailors use to avoid the question. There are specific, understandable reasons why prices vary, and once you understand them, you can make a genuinely informed decision about where to invest.

This guide breaks down exactly what a suit costs in Sydney in 2026, what drives those prices, and how to assess whether you're getting value for money.

What Is the Difference Between Tailor Made and True Bespoke?

This is the question at the heart of suit pricing — and it's one the industry doesn't always answer clearly.

Tailor Made

A Tailor Made suit at Chokman is built from your precise measurements. Unlike off-the-rack suits that come in fixed sizes, or made-to-measure services that adjust a standard block pattern, our Tailor Made service constructs your garment to your specific proportions. The result is a suit that fits significantly better than anything you can buy off a rack — with the fabric, lining, and design details of your choosing.

This is the ideal entry point for professionals wanting their first quality custom suit, grooms looking for a well-fitted wedding suit, and anyone who wants a genuinely custom garment without the full bespoke investment.

True Bespoke

True Bespoke is the pinnacle of the tailoring craft. The $600 premium covers:

  • A unique paper pattern created exclusively for your body — no block or template is used as a starting point

  • Your pattern is kept on file permanently — future garments can be made from it with minimal re-measurement

  • Additional fittings — the extra precision required for a true bespoke garment means more touchpoints to ensure perfection

  • Full canvas construction — the jacket's interior structure is entirely hand-stitched, allowing it to mould to your body over time and hold its shape for decades

  • The highest level of craftsmanship — hand-stitched details, functional buttonholes, and finishing that reflects the true tradition of bespoke tailoring

True Bespoke is recommended for clients with very specific fit requirements, unusual proportions, those who want the absolute finest result, or anyone making a long-term investment in a suit they'll wear for 15+ years.

What Does "Bespoke" Actually Mean?

The word bespoke is one of the most misused terms in men's fashion. Technically, a bespoke suit is one made from a unique pattern created exclusively for your body — no base template, no block adjustments. Every measurement, every seam line, every dart is drawn specifically for you.

This is different from:

Made-to-measure — a standard pattern adjusted to your measurements. Faster and cheaper, but limited by the underlying template. Cannot fully account for unusual proportions or asymmetries.

Off-the-rack with alterations — a mass-produced suit taken in or let out after purchase. Alterations can improve fit but cannot change the fundamental construction — shoulder width, chest shape, and seat cannot be structurally altered.

At Chokman, even our entry-level Tailor Made service delivers a significantly better result than made-to-measure, because we take 30+ measurements — including sub-measurements that most tailors skip entirely, such as the precise curvature of the lower back, the position of the shoulder blade, the fullness of the seat, and the individual lengths of the left and right arms (which are almost always different).

What Drives the Price of a Custom Suit in Sydney?

1. Fabric

Fabric is the single biggest variable in suit pricing. The "Super" number on wool refers to the fineness of the fibre — the higher the number, the finer, softer, and more expensive the wool.

  • Super 120s — the workhorse of quality tailoring. Excellent durability, good drape, suitable for daily wear. Starting price at Chokman: $699 (Tailor Made)

  • Super 140s — finer and softer than 120s, with a more elegant drape. Ideal for client-facing professionals and special occasions. Starting price: $999

  • Super 160s — among the finest wools available for everyday tailoring. Exceptionally soft, beautiful drape, but requires more careful handling. Starting price: $1,399

  • Holland & Sherry — one of the world's most prestigious fabric mills, founded in 1837. Used by Savile Row tailors. True Bespoke suits from $2,800

All Chokman fabrics are 100% European wool — primarily from Italian mills like Loro Piana, Vitale Barberis Canonico, and Scabal, and from Scottish mills for the Holland & Sherry range. Over 500 fabric options are available across both service tiers.

2. Construction Method

How a suit is built has a significant impact on both price and quality.

Fused construction — the canvas (the internal structure that gives a jacket its shape) is glued to the fabric using heat. Cheaper and faster to produce. The canvas separates from the fabric over time, causing bubbling and loss of shape. Found in most off-the-rack suits.

Half canvas — the canvas is hand-stitched to the chest and lapel area, with the lower half fused. A good middle ground — the jacket retains its shape longer and moulds to the body over time. Used in Chokman's Tailor Made service.

Full canvas — the canvas is entirely hand-stitched throughout the jacket. The most labour-intensive construction method. The jacket breathes with the body, moulds to the wearer over years, and holds its shape indefinitely. The hallmark of True Bespoke — included in Chokman's True Bespoke service.

3. Labour

A custom suit requires significantly more skilled labour than off-the-rack or made-to-measure. At Chokman, every suit is hand-crafted by in-house tailors with over 20 years of experience. The True Bespoke process — from initial pattern drafting through to the final pressing — involves 40+ hours of skilled work that cannot be replicated by machine.

4. Number of Measurements

Most off-the-rack tailors take 5–8 measurements. Made-to-measure services typically take 10–15. At Chokman, both service tiers include 30+ measurements. True Bespoke adds additional measurements for the paper pattern creation, ensuring every asymmetry and proportion of your body is accounted for.

From design to tailor to final garment

Is a Custom Suit Worth the Investment?

For most professional and special occasion needs, yes — with one important qualification. A custom suit is only worth the investment if it's made well.

Here's how to think about the economics:

Cost per wear — a quality suit in Super 120s wool, properly cared for, will last 10–15 years. A corporate professional wearing the suit twice a week accumulates 1,000+ wears over that period. At $699, that's less than $0.70 per wear — significantly less than most off-the-rack alternatives that need replacing every 2–3 years.

The fit dividend — a suit that fits correctly makes the wearer look and feel significantly better. For lawyers, executives, and anyone whose appearance is part of their professional brand, the confidence that comes from an impeccably fitted suit has real, measurable career value.

The alteration trap — many people spend $300–$500 on off-the-rack suits and then $100–$200 on alterations, only to end up with a suit that still doesn't fit properly because the fundamental construction wasn't designed for their body. The total spend often approaches entry-level Tailor Made pricing, with far inferior results.

How Chokman Compares to Other Sydney Tailors

Sydney has a range of custom tailoring options across different price points:

Budget end ($400–$700) — typically made-to-measure rather than true bespoke, often using lower-grade fabrics and fused construction. Faster turnaround (1–2 weeks) but limited fit quality.

Mid range ($700–$2,000) — where Chokman sits with both service tiers. True craftsmanship, European wool fabrics, experienced in-house tailors, 3–5 week turnaround. Best value for most professional and personal needs.

Premium ($2,000–$4,000) — typically involves more extensive consultation, additional fittings, and the finest fabric selections.

Savile Row tier ($4,000+) — London-based tailors with Sydney consultations. The pinnacle of the craft, but with pricing that reflects the brand as much as the garment.

For most Sydney professionals, Chokman's Tailor Made ($699+) or True Bespoke ($1,299+) represents the optimal intersection of genuine craftsmanship and accessible pricing.
