The Bespoke Tailoring Process at Chokman Sydney CBD
TL;DR: The bespoke tailoring process at Chokman Sydney CBD involves four steps: a 30–45 minute consultation, 30+ individual body measurements, in-house construction by experienced tailors, and a final fitting and collection. Most suits are ready in 3–5 weeks from the first appointment. The process is available for men and women, by appointment seven days a week at 321 Pitt Street, Sydney CBD.
Getting a bespoke suit made is not complicated. But most people don't know what to expect — and that uncertainty stops them from booking. This page walks you through exactly what happens at Chokman from the moment you contact us to the moment you walk out wearing your suit.
Every suit at Chokman starts with a conversation and ends with a garment built to your exact measurements. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is outsourced. Every step happens in our Sydney CBD studio.
What Is the Process for Getting a Bespoke Suit at Chokman?
The Chokman bespoke process has four steps: consultation, measurements, construction and fitting. From the first appointment to collection, most suits are ready in 3 to 5 weeks. The process is the same for men and women, for single suits and wedding parties, for Super 120s wool and Holland & Sherry bespoke.
Here is what each step involves.
Step 1 — Consultation (30 to 45 Minutes)
Your first appointment is a conversation, not a measurement session.
John sits down with you and asks about the occasion, the environment and how you want to feel in the suit. Are you dressing for a boardroom? A courtroom? A garden wedding? A race day? The answers shape every decision that follows.
From there, you browse the fabric library. Chokman stocks 500+ European wool fabrics across Super 120s, Super 140s and Super 160s grades, plus Holland & Sherry cloth woven in Scotland. You handle the fabrics, see them in natural light and choose with guidance from John.
Then the details: silhouette, lapel style, number of buttons, lining colour, pocket style, monogramming. Every decision is yours. John advises. You decide.
No pressure. No rush. The consultation is included in the price of the suit.
Step 2 — 30+ Individual Body Measurements
Most tailors take 10 to 15 measurements. Chokman takes 30 or more.
The difference matters. Standard measurements capture the broad dimensions of a body. Chokman's measurements capture the details that make a suit fit correctly on your specific body: shoulder slope, posture angle, the difference in height between your left and right shoulder, the forward pitch of your arms, your waist-to-hip ratio, the shape of your seat and the precise length from your natural waist to where you want the trouser to break at the shoe.
These sub-measurements are what most tailors skip. They're also what determines whether a jacket sits correctly across the back, whether the chest closes without pulling and whether the trousers drape cleanly from seat to hem.
For women's suits, additional measurements account for bust circumference, the precise position of the waist and the waist-to-hip ratio that determines how the skirt or trouser fits through the hip without pulling or bunching.
All measurements are recorded and kept on file. Every future garment is cut from your existing measurement record, updated at each visit.
Step 3 — In-House Construction (2 to 4 Weeks)
Your suit is made in Chokman's Sydney CBD workshop by our in-house tailors.
Nothing is sent overseas. Nothing is outsourced to a third-party factory. Every cut, every stitch and every finish is completed in our studio at Suite 8, Level 6, 321 Pitt Street.
Construction begins with the pattern, cut to your exact measurements. The fabric is then cut, assembled and basted, which means loosely stitched together in a shell that holds the shape without finalising the seams. This shell is what you try on at your fitting.
Linen suits are constructed with a lighter hand than wool suits, with less interfacing and a softer internal structure. Wedding suits are finished with additional detail attention including hand-pressed seams and checked alignment across the full party.
Construction takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on the complexity of the garment and the current workshop schedule.
How Long Does a Custom Suit Take at Chokman?
Most custom suits at Chokman are ready in 3 to 5 weeks from the first fitting. This includes the consultation, measurement session, in-house construction and at least one fitting. For wedding parties and complex garments, we recommend booking at least 6 weeks before the event date to allow comfortable time for fitting and any adjustments.
Rush orders may be possible depending on the current workshop schedule. Contact us to discuss your timeline.
Step 4 — Fitting and Collection
When your suit is ready, you return for a fitting.
You try the suit in its finished state. John checks the fit across every point: shoulder, chest, waist, seat, sleeve length, trouser break. Any adjustments required are made on the spot or completed and ready for collection within a few days.
Most suits require no adjustments at the fitting. When the measurements are taken correctly and the pattern is cut precisely, the suit fits correctly the first time.
Plus size clients and clients with significant postural asymmetry occasionally require a second fitting. This is scheduled and included in the price.
Your suit is pressed, finished and ready to wear when you collect it.
True Bespoke vs Tailor Made — What's the Difference?
Tailor Made is Chokman's standard offering. Your suit is built from your exact measurements, cut from scratch by our in-house tailors. It is a significant step above made-to-measure or off-the-rack. Every Tailor Made suit starts from $699 in Super 120s European wool.
True Bespoke adds a layer of craftsmanship above Tailor Made. It includes additional fittings, full canvas construction (which means the internal structure is hand-stitched rather than fused), hand-finished details throughout, and a unique paper pattern cut specifically to your body and kept on file permanently. Every future garment is cut from your exact paper pattern, not a digital approximation.
True Bespoke adds $600 to the base price of the suit. It is the appropriate choice for clients who want the absolute finest construction and plan to build a long-term wardrobe with Chokman.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a bespoke suit take at Chokman? Most suits at Chokman are ready in 3 to 5 weeks from the first fitting. We recommend booking at least 6 weeks before any fixed event date to allow comfortable time for consultation, construction and fitting without deadline pressure. Rush orders may be possible depending on the workshop schedule.
What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure? Made-to-measure adjusts a standard pattern to your approximate size. Bespoke starts from scratch with your exact measurements. At Chokman, every suit is cut from a pattern built to your specific body proportions including sub-measurements most tailors skip. The result is a fit that made-to-measure cannot achieve.
How many measurements does Chokman take? Chokman takes 30 or more individual body measurements. These include standard measurements like chest, waist and seat, plus sub-measurements including shoulder slope, posture angle, arm pitch and waist-to-hip ratio. These details determine whether a suit fits correctly across every part of the body.
Do I need to know what I want before my consultation? No. The consultation is designed to guide you through every decision. John will ask about your occasion, environment and preferences and make recommendations based on your answers. You don't need to know fabric grades, lapel styles or silhouette options before you arrive.
What happens if the suit doesn't fit correctly at the fitting? Any adjustments required at the fitting are made on the spot or completed within a few days at no extra cost. Most suits fit correctly at the first fitting when measurements are taken precisely. Clients with significant postural asymmetry may require a second fitting, which is scheduled and included in the price.
